Source: Rocket LabOne deal. Eight billion dollars. And Rocket Lab is no longer just a rocket company. The acquisition of Iridium Communications has transformed the company overnight from a launch provider into a vertically integrated space company with an operational low Earth orbit constellation serving 2.55 million subscribers worldwide.
The combined Rocket Lab-Iridium entity enters a satellite communications market undergoing rapid consolidation, competing against SpaceX’s Starlink, which acquired EchoStar’s spectrum for $17 billion to power a direct-to-smartphone service, and Amazon, which moved in April to acquire Globalstar for $11.5 billion, inheriting its direct-to-device spectrum and Apple’s Emergency SOS user base. Against those competitors, the Rocket Lab-Iridium deal stands out by combining globally coordinated L-band spectrum with a communications network already trusted by defense agencies, aviation authorities, and maritime operators worldwide.
The Iridium NEXT constellation consists of 66 operational and 14 spare satellites operating in low-Earth orbit (LEO). There is also one spare on the ground. Each satellite, based on the Thales Alenia Space ELiTeBUS 1000 platform, has a launch mass of 860 kilograms. The satellites operate at an altitude of 780 kilometers, utilizing both Ka-band and L-band spectrums. The L-band is particularly valuable as it is highly weather-resilient, making it ideal for remote, maritime, and military communications. The spacecraft are designed to remain operational for at least 10 years, but Iridium anticipates that they will remain operational for 15 years.
The Iridium NEXT constellation offers higher bandwidth than the original Iridium constellation, enabling Iridium to compete with other satellite operators like Inmarsat that are offering customers broadband solutions. This enables Iridium to compete in new markets, including the maritime, aviation, land mobile, machine-to-machine (M2M), and government sectors.
With the acquisition of Iridium, Rocket Lab has a foothold in the LEO market. The combined company would integrate spacecraft design, satellite manufacturing, launch services, and satellite network operations under a single corporate structure. Rocket Lab said the acquisition would also support development of Iridium’s next-generation satellite constellation while expanding capabilities in satellite Internet of Things (IoT) services, direct-to-device communications, positioning, navigation and timing applications, and other space-based communications markets.
Iridium’s satellite network is widely used for resilient communications in remote regions and by government and military customers that require global connectivity. The company has also been developing non-terrestrial network capabilities that enable direct communications between satellites and compatible mobile devices.
By merging launch infrastructure and spacecraft manufacturing directly with an active, revenue-generating communications network, the deal creates an entity capable of challenging established heavyweights like SpaceX, with launch, satellite manufacturing, and communications services under one roof. Eliminating third-party launch costs for deploying and replenishing Iridium’s constellation should improve the long-term outlook for the company, particularly as launch demand continues to grow.
