Virginia-based aviation startup Electra has announced the attainment of a $115.0 million tranche of Series B funding that will facilitate the initiation of pre-production and certification for its flagship EL9 ultra-short aircraft design. The new financing was advanced foremost via Prysm Capital, with the firm’s Co-Founder subsequently joining Electra’s Board of Directors.

According to Electra, the hybrid-electric EL9 is capable of taking off and landing in only 150 feet and at speeds as low as 35 knots. The fixed-wing aircraft features eight electrically powered fixed propellers and motors and utilizes ‘blown lift’ capabilities to enhance its unique performance profile. The aircraft can alternatively host nine passengers or a payload of 3,000 lbs depending on configuration, with a range of up 1,100 nautical miles.

The EL9 has secured over 2,200 pre-orders to date, with both civil and military operators expressing interest in the platform.
