Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) has signed an Alliance Adherence Agreement with SkyTeam, marking a key step toward the Scandinavian carrier officially joining the global airline alliance. SAS is slated to become part of the SkyTeam alliance on September 1, 2024.
SAS said that its customers will be able to benefit from connectivity across SkyTeam’s network of more than 1,060 destinations, including previously unserved cities, particularly across Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Nineteen airlines are currently members of SkyTeam, including such carriers as Air France, KLM, Delta Air Lines, Korean Air, Middle East Airlines, Saudia, and Virgin Atlantic.
SAS is currently a member of the Star Alliance, of which it was a founding member. The carrier will remain a Star Alliance member through August 31, 2024.
The move by SAS from the Star Alliance to SkyTeam results from the airline’s restructuring under Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. SAS had filed for Chapter 11 in the U.S. in mid-2022. Air France-KLM Group, whose Air France and KLM subsidiary airlines are SkyTeam members, is part of a consortium of investors that is acquiring a majority stake in SAS. Plans call for Air France-KLM to hold approximately 19.9 percent of the equity in SAS.
