Fresh off the heels of the company’s introduction of a specialized defense oriented business unit last month, California AAM startup Archer Aviation has announced that retired United States Air Force (USAF) Lieutenant General Scott Howell will be joining its advisory board. Howell, who served as the Commanding General of the United States’ Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) from July 2018 to July 2021, will be tapped to provide subject matter expertise pertaining to the potential military applications of AAM platforms.
Archer is amongst the AAM contractors most intimately involved in defense sector developments. In 2023, the USAF entered into a partnership with Archer prospectively worth some $142.0 million to advance testing and development efforts pertinent to the future deployment of AAM assets in a military context. In December 2024, Archer announced the establishment of a partnership with defense contractor Anduril to develop eVTOL solutions targeted towards the requirements of the U.S military.
